How to Talk to Kids about Sex and Consent

April 25, 2023

Prepare your child for tough adult situations.

Setting boundaries is important at every age, especially when it comes to sex and consent. Many adolescents in our youth residential treatment center in Richmond are victims of disrespected sexual boundaries, which can leave lasting effects on their physical and mental health. We believe prevention is the best place to start — here’s how to talk to kids about sex and consent.

Define Consent

Consent can take two forms: verbal and non-verbal. Your child should know the full scope of what consent is and how they can communicate it. This includes:

  • Directly saying yes or no
  • Nodding or shaking your head
  • Body language
  • Contact that is initiated by both people or just one person

Consent is not flirting, wearing revealing clothing, or seeming like the other person is into it. Likewise, consent can always be retracted. Teach your kids to leave nothing to chance.

Talk About Peer Pressure

Many times, kids or teens will be pressured by another party to engage in sexual activities they don’t want. Teach your kids it’s okay to say no. They don’t have to explain themselves. They’re in control of their own bodies and decisions.

When Talking is Too Late

If your teen has been sexually abused, brainwashed, or could be in harm’s way, our adolescent behavioral health services in Richmond, VA can help, starting with a change in environment. Contact us today to learn more about our Sanctuary Model® and in-patient treatments.
