Short Term Residential Care

Short Term Residential Care

Hallmark Youthcare is committed to meeting the needs of youth in the least restrictive environment. Sometimes a youth requires a short stay to meet their needs before stepping down to a less secure placement or returning home. Our Treatment Team works closely with the resident, family and referral source to determine the most beneficial length of stay.

CLINICAL SERVICES

The Treatment Team personalizes our range of clinical services, including:

  • Assessment and Diagnosis
  • Psychiatric services weekly
  • Nursing services 24/7
  • Individual Therapy three times per week. Therapists often employ Cognitive Behavioral Therapy when working with residents because this is an evidence-based best practice.
  • Family Therapy weekly
  • Process Group Therapy three times per week
  • Psychoeducational Groups (Anger Management, Chemical Dependency Education, Sanctuary psychoeducation, and Mind-Body education)
  • Activity Therapy #times per week
  • Life Skills Training
  • Case management
  • Sanctuary “Red Flag” meetings to address special concerns for a resident
  • Discharge planning

THERAPEUTIC COMMUNITY LIVING

Nurses and Mental Health Technicians trained in the Sanctuary Model provide 24/7 attention and supervision to residents. Safety of residents and staff is of primary importance. Twice daily, residents hold Sanctuary Community Meetings designed to assist with social skills, emotional intelligence, emotional regulation skills, and goal-setting. Residents are supported in their efforts to independently perform personal hygiene, room cleaning, laundry, stress management and social skill building in the residential community.

RECREATIONAL SERVICES

Our Activities Therapy Department works with residents independently and in groups to teach them how to enjoy leisure time in fun, safe and cooperative ways.

NATURAL SUPPORTS

Discharge planning begins upon admission. Program Therapists work closely with families and referral sources to identify the best services and supportive persons in the resident’s community to help ensure the youth’s success upon return to a less restrictive environment.

Who do we serve?

We serve at-risk youth, ages 11-17, and their families. These youth have manifested emotional and behavioral disturbances. Their diagnoses may include anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, substance abuse disorders, ADHD and Oppositional Defiant Disorder.

What kinds of treatment services are offered?

Hallmark Youthcare offers:

- Assessment and Diagnostic Services
- Short and Long-term Residential Services
- Educational Services
- Dual-Diagnosis (Mental Health and Substance abuse/Chemical Dependency) Services
- Treatment for Sexually Acting Out Youth

What kind of educational services are offered?
McAfee Academy is our on-campus school. As an accredited member of the Virginia Association of Independent Specialized Education Facilities (VAISEF), McAfee Academy is licensed by the Virginia Department of Education to offer both regular education and special education services, including those outlined on the Individual Education Plan (IEP). We work with the public schools to ensure that all educational needs are met, including SOLs, and that the youth is smoothly transitioned back into public school.

Do you address substance abuse issues?
Yes. Hallmark Youthcare employs psychiatrists and program therapists with expertise in addiction. We offer specialized individual, family and group therapies for youths with these issues.

Does Hallmark Youthcare offer acute or crisis stabilization services?
No. If you are in need of these services, please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room. In the event that a resident develops the need for acute care, staff at Hallmark Youthcare work closely with Goochland Emergency Services.

What is the average length of stay for a resident at Hallmark Youthcare?
The length of stay depends upon the needs of the resident. On average, residents require 6 months of treatment.

What is The Sanctuary Model?
The Sanctuary Model is an empirically supported trauma-informed model for residential services. Building on the strengths of each child, our program addresses four key areas:

S – Safety: physical, emotional, social, and moral
E – Emotional regulation skills
L – Loss and trauma therapy
F – Future vision and goals for a better life

These four areas are known as the SELF framework. Every aspect of residential care, from community living to therapy, incorporates an emphasis on these areas. Every staff member, including housekeepers, maintenance personnel, and dietary workers as well as administrators, teachers, nurses, therapists and mental health technicians, are trained in this model and seek to support residents in these key areas.

What are the requirements for visitation/family therapy?
Hallmark Youthcare strongly encourages family contact. Regularly scheduled visitation hours are held Saturday and Sunday from 1-4:30 p.m. Your Program Therapist will adjust visitation to accommodate any difficulties you might have with the regular schedule.

Therapists at Hallmark Youthcare facilitate face-to-face family therapy on a weekly basis. Hallmark believes strongly in working with the families. When a family is unable to participate in person, therapeutic contact between youth and family is supplemented by phone sessions.

In addition, a Family Support Group, led by Program Therapists, is offered on a monthly basis to assist parents and family members in learning to understand and more effectively respond to their youth. We highly recommend participation in this group.

What is the level of interaction between boys and girls in the residential program?
The boy’s units and girl’s units are located on opposite sides of the facility. Boys and girls are not allowed to go into each others living space. All residents are under direct supervision of staff at all times. They participate in school activities and some recreational activities together.

Where is Hallmark Youthcare located?

Hallmark Youthcare is located in a park-like setting at 12800 West Creek Parkway in beautiful Goochland County, Virginia. Our building is a locked, secure residential home for at-risk youth.

TESTIMONIALS

Our Happy Clients

  • "I went here in 2017 and I was on a bad path. It changed my prospective and I myself was very pleased with my outcome. I had a very great therapist and great staff councilors at the time also."
    Hannah Holman
  • "My niece went here and the program was so helpful for her! She had a great therapist and she has made so many changes. I recommend this program to anyone who is having challenges with a child they love!"
    Victoria Bishop-Ofsowitz
  • "I give this 5 stars, not because we never had any issues, but because when we did, they were always addressed and taken care of. My daughter was in a specialized program that really met her needs and her therapist Ali was so involved and hands on and really helped my family and my daughter! We're glad she went here."
