June is National Safety Month

June 9, 2023

Here’s why mental health is an important part of National Safety Month and how you can help.

June’s National Safety Month brings awareness to ways you can keep your home environment safe from danger. This includes “invisible dangers,” such as those that come with mental health struggles, sexual abuse, child abuse, and behavioral problems. Our residential treatment center provides trauma-informed care in Richmond for teens who may have experienced one or all of the above, and we’re taking this time to highlight ways you can help.

Recognize signs of endangerment

Child abuse doesn’t always take the form of bruises and black eyes; depression isn’t just sullen attitudes and tears. Even parents who have close relationships with their children can’t count on them coming forward about these issues, but they may show there’s a problem in other ways:

  • Low self-esteem
  • Withdrawal from friends or activities
  • Poor sleep habits
  • Poor nutrition choices
  • Frequent absences from school
  • Self-harm or attempts
  • Defiant behaviors
  • Depression
  • Unusual fears
  • A drop in school performance

One of these signs alone might not be cause for concern. But prolonged difficulties or a combination of these signs could indicate a personal safety issue.

Talk to your teens about hidden dangers

Prevention can sometimes be the best cure for safety concerns. Talk to your teen about consent and peer pressure. Let them know they don’t have to struggle alone.

Know where to go for help

For teens struggling with issues that affect their own personal safety and that of the people around them, a residential youth treatment program in Richmond, VA may help. Get to know the resources in your community, including Hallmark Youth Care, so you can intervene as early as possible and create a brighter future for your teen.
