Here’s how you can observe and recognize child abuse prevention month.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness about the devastating impact of child abuse and neglect. This month-long campaign aims to educate people on how they can help prevent and respond to child abuse, as well as promote healthy and safe environments30 for children.

At least 1 in 7 children experiences abuse every year in the U.S. The effects of these experiences can last a lifetime, affecting everything from mental health to relationships with others. 

Every adult shares the responsibility to provide safe spaces for children. Here are some ways to observe child abuse prevention month at work, school, or within your community.

Talk to Your Kids about Child Abuse

Establish personal safety rules with your children. Let them know how to report child abuse. Be open to their questions.

Learn the Signs

Teach yourself to recognize possible child abuse. Signs may include:

  • Withdrawal
  • Changes in behavior
  • Depression
  • Sleep problems
  • Visible injury
